I made a trip to my local farmers market and discovered that the first Mandarin oranges of the season are in! The Satsuma peels easily and segments nicely without falling apart. The peel is a pale orange color, but the inside is bright candy corn orange. The shape varies on this citrus and some even look sort of like a flat tire. All Satsumas are grown in the San Joaquin Valley of California.
According to one farmer, Satsuma Mandarins are available until late December. If they aren’t available at your farmers market, try your grocer. They are super sweet, super juicy, super yummy, and super low in calories. Add a handful of cashews or almonds for a healthy holiday snack.
