Blood oranges are very photogenic. Crimson, almost blood-colored flesh, this citrus offers more antioxidants than other orange due to the amount of anthrocyanin (red pigment) in the flesh. Blood oranges taste different than other oranges. Distinct raspberry flavours are present in addition to the usual citrus notes which makes them fabulously palate friendly. Use them in smoothies, pancakes, marmalades, desserts, salads, and mimosas. I prefer California grown Taroccos for my recipes because of the sweetness (brix to acid ratio is generally above 12.0) and juiciness. Kill flu season – it has the highest Vitamin C content of any orange variety grown in the world. Seedless and easy to peel, the thin orange skin is just slightly blushed in red tones. Blood orange season is January to May.
